Pililla Wind Farm is the first Luzon-based wind farm outside of Ilocos consisting of 27 wind turbines.
There is a wind farm in Rizal?! I asked in surprise and amazement the first time I heard about Pililla Wind Farm. Apparently, the Pililla windmills site was among the Rizal destinations included in our photowalk. Located in the municipality of Pililla in Rizal province, the Pililla Wind Farm provides electricity to around 66,000 households in Manila. Prior to our visit in the town, I’ve only known the famous Bangui Windmills in Ilocos Norte.
Our Rizal photowalk was not only jam-packed but full of surprises as well, at least for me. I was really glad I joined because I was able to explore destinations that I didn’t know existed in the humble province. Like the beautiful pilgrimage site of Regina Rica, I was astounded to discover Pililla Wind Farm.
Arriving at Pililla Wind Farm, we immediately got off from our service van. A cheerful, young boy greeted us selling some quail eggs for snacks. His name was Onyok and I will never forget him. He was funny and would go around shouting “Kamukha mo si Angel Locsin.” to get your attention and for you to be convinced to buy from him (he says it to all girls he meets, lol).
About Pililla Wind Farm
The municipality of Pililla is near the southern tip of Rizal bordering the province of Laguna. But why is Pililla chosen as the site of the wind farm? Apparently, Pililla is a great wind location. Since the place rings Laguna de Bay, Pililla has become part of a natural wind corridor produced by the unique geographical features (tall mountains and proximity to the sea) surrounding the lake. Average wind speed at Pililla can be as high as 36 km/h.
Pililla Wind Farm has 27 wind turbines and each turbine generates 2MW. The wind turbines measure 125 meters in height or as tall as a 33-story building. Since it is near Metro Manila which has the largest electricity demand, the power generated by Pililla Wind Farm only needs to travel a short distance preventing transmission loss.
There are areas where you can go around and even see the wind turbines closely. What is visually appealing at Pililla Wind Farm is that the wind turbines were built with a scenic mountain backdrop. The verdant landscape is remarkably decorated by towering wind turbines.
Pililla Wind Farm Tips and Safety Guidelines
Pililla Wind Farm is a private renewable energy facility and safety guidelines must be observed.
- Use of drones and flying kites are strictly prohibited in the wind farm.
- Smoking is not allowed.
- Don’t go near the cliffs.
- Strictly observe and follow safety warning signs. You should not go near areas with caution tapes.
- Do not leave your things unattended.
- Maintain cleanliness and do not throw your garbage anywhere.
- Don’t forget to wear sunblock because it can be a really hot day.
Overall
Pililla Wind Farm has indeed become a tourist destination in Rizal. But more than just another attraction, the site is a good contribution to the global efforts to stop climate change. Pililla Wind Farm reduces carbon emissions up to 75,000 tons annually. It can also help the country achieve energy security by decreasing our dependency to foreign resources like coal and oil. Also, no pollution comes out of Pililla Wind Farm, there is no smoke or any discharge.
We really had a wonderful day visiting Pililla Wind Farm. You can add it to one of the places to go in Rizal. You can easily explore it because of its proximity to Manila.
It is also good to be aware of sites like Pililla Wind Farm and how they can impact the environment. I hope we will have more sources of renewable energy.
