The Three Rondavels are made from shale and quartzite. These geological wonders were formed because of erosion. But folklore has it that the Three Rondavels are the three wives (Magabolle, Mogoladikwe, and Maseroto) of Mapjaneng or the Chief (Bapedi chief). The Chief is known to have battled invading Swazis and is represented by the flat-topped mountain standing beside the Three Rondavels.
