Known as one of the cleanest lakes in Asia, Kayangan Lake in Coron is a fascinating natural landmark in Palawan.
Kayangan Lake in Coron Palawan
Just as Maquinit Hot Spring gives you an enchanting vibe, Kayangan Lake in Coron, Palawan also has its own enigmatic charm. According to stories, the Tagbanua tribe, who are natives of the island, believed that the spirits of their ancestors inhabit the lake. They even had to perform rituals to transfer the spirits from Kayangan Lake to the inaccessible and forbidden Cabugao Lake. That is when Kayangan Lake was allowed to be opened to the public.
Hiking Kayangan Lake
It was raining when we arrived in Palawan. We were hoping that the weather will get better in the coming days but it did not. But the bad weather did not stop us from doing our Coron island tour. As instructed, we met Cristine, our tour guide, at the front desk of Coron Village Lodge. After gearing up, we rode our way to Coron pier where our boat was already waiting.
The quick boat ride sort of gave a preview of what the island has to offer. Towering limestone cliffs beautifully decorated the pristine waters. Our Coron island hopping actually started at Siete Pecados Marine Park. Spending a few minutes at the site, we then proceed to Kayangan Lake.
Arriving at Kayangan Lake, there were already a number of boats at the docking area. My fancy footwear was actually not suited for the short hike that we need to take. After just a few steps, the strap of my slippers got ripped off. The narrow trail that we needed to navigate was made of rocks with sharp edges and it was even made slippery by the rain. I had no choice but to climb the hill barefooted because I will certainly not miss our Kayangan Lake tour. I was just extra careful not to get my feet wounded.
Most Photographed Spot in Coron Palawan
At a certain point along the climb, we passed by this very dark cave. You cannot go inside but the notable thing here is the amazing view you can get. Standing in front of the cave, you will see what they refer to as the most photographed spot in Coron. The sight of limestone islands in an exquisite seascape was indeed spellbinding.
Best Coron Palawan Tourist Spot
Finally reaching Kayangan lake, a breathtaking view confronted us. It was no less than captivating. I can fairly say that it was worth a hill climb, even if I had to do it barefooted. Kayangan Lake was awarded three times for being the cleanest lake in the country which was not really surprising with its very clear waters even revealing the rock formations underneath.
You will notice that the lake has no shallow part. If you intend to go diving in Coron, Palawan, Kayangan Lake may be a good location. Just make sure you dive with a buddy and you have a guide that is knowledgeable with the lake’s underwater terrain. Swimming or snorkeling is also a nice thing to do.
If you’re not in the mood for any water activities, there is a narrow platform made of wood along the lake. You can just sit, relax, and absorb the beauty right in front of you. Kayangan Lake should definitely be included in your Coron itinerary.
How to Get to Kayangan Lake
From the town, the only way to get to Kayangan Lake is to ride a boat. It is possible to hire a private boat but availing a Coron tour package may give you a better or cheaper deal especially if you’re in a group.
