Your Coron travel will not be complete without taking a dip at Maquinit Hot Spring. Around thirty minutes away from the town proper, it is the only hot spring in the Philippines with saltwater. Surrounded by mangrove trees and with a serene view of the sea, the place gives that enchanted vibe while you’re taking a rejuvenating spa.
Therapeutic Dip at Maquinit Hot Spring
People usually visit Maquinit Hot Spring after their Coron town tour or after climbing Mt. Tapyas (another iconic Coron, Palawan tourist spot). This means you also get to watch a beautiful sunset.
Going to Maquinit Hot Spring involves a bumpy ride on unpaved road that is even muddy after a downpour. Just like the others, our group went straight to the place after a tiring yet a fun hike at Mt. Tapyas. Maybe some would find it a bit strange to have a dip in an extremely hot water when you already soaked yourself in sweat from a mountain climb. Personally, I find Maquinit Hot Spring as therapeutic. Coming from a hike, it really comforted my tired legs.
Maquinit Hot Spring’s Enchanted Vibe
Nature lovers would really love Maquinit Hot Spring’s enchanted vibe. The sight of the ocean and the view of the mountains serve as its scenic backdrop. The place is also surrounded with mangrove trees. Add the wooden bridge and the sun slowly setting – you’ll just be simply captivated. No doubt Maquinit Hot Spring is one of the sought after attractions in Coron, Palawan.
Pools with 45-Degree-Celsius Temperature
With one huge pool and a number of mini pools, the water from Maquinit Hot Spring has a temperature of 45 degrees Celsius. This is because its water actually comes from a volcano.
If you’re not used to soaking in hot springs, you might find the water too hot. To get a good feel of it, dip some parts of your body first like your feet. After a few minutes, you’ll get more comfortable with it. As you get yourself used to with the temperature, try to dip other parts of your body.
It is advised to get off of the water every now and then and not to continuously stay immersed in the water for a very long time.
Sunset at Maquinit Hot Spring
Visiting Maquinit Hot Spring in the late afternoon may be the best time. The cooler atmosphere is a better addition to the extremely hot pool. Aside from that, you will be in a treat for a magical view of the sunset. However, people usually crowd around this time.
How to Get to Maquinit Hot Spring
- Ride or Rent a Tricycle
If you did not avail any Coron tour package, you can simply rent a tricycle going to Maquinit Hot Spring for around PHP300 (~6USD) – PHP400 (~8USD). It should be easy to get one from your Coron accommodation.
- Coron Tours
If you avail a tour package, make sure to get a Coron town tour. Usually, Maquinit Hot Spring is included in this Coron itinerary.
Coron Travel Tips
- Expect a very rough ride going to Maquinit Hot Spring.
- There are few wooden cottages available where you can place your things. But make sure to mind your belongings or don’t leave your valuables unattended.
- There is no shower in the place. Only a dressing room near the entrance is provided where you can change clothing.
