Hiking Mt. Tapyas gives you an amazing, panoramic view of Coron. With more than 700 steps to reach the summit, Mt. Tapyas is the second highest mountain at the place and is easily accessible when doing the Coron town tour.
Mt. Tapyas Coron Palawan
Mt. Tapyas came from the Filipino word “tapyas” which means ripped off because a portion of the mountain is actually cut off. First-timers would be surprised to see a well paved path leading to Mt. Tapyas summit. Yes, you will climb concrete stairs with hand railings. Such well-conditioned setting might make it sound an easy hike. But I would still say 700+ steps is not just a piece of cake! There are benches provided along the way in case you need rest. You will also encounter some joggers during the climb.
Sunrise or Sunset
For a more stunning view, you can opt to climb Mt. Tapyas during sunrise or sunset. Though I didn’t had the opportunity to witness either of the two even on my second time to visit the mountain, the natural scenic beauty encompassing Mt. Tapyas makes the hike worthwhile. This is why you should include it in your Coron itinerary.

From time to time during our ascent, we would stop and snap some photos. Even though we’re not yet at the summit, we already witnessed a remarkable view of islands surrounded by waters. It was also a good thing to be surrounded by greens on our way up. Mt. Tapyas is definitely one of the striking attractions in Coron Palawan.
Step Counter at Mt. Tapyas Hike
Probably a way to keep everyone motivated, there are markers indicating the number of steps you already take. It was a joy to reach the first hundred steps and when you get to see the 700 marker – a sense of accomplishment would slowly sink in.

Finally arriving at the summit, a steel cross can be found at the center of the spacious viewing deck. Few benches are also provided offering visitors some rest.
Once at the peak, the panoramic view of Coron town with the surrounding islands will be revealed completely. You can really get amazing photos here. But more than the snapshots, it’s one of those moments when you can just pause and stare blankly at nature’s beauty.

The sight of Mt. Tapyas can also be seen from Coron pier. It is viewable from some of the nearby islands as well.
Depending on the Coron tour package you availed, people usually climb Mt. Tapyas and afterwards, go to Maquinit Hot Spring. Both definitely are recommended tourist spots in Coron, Palawan.
How to Get to Mt. Tapyas
- Walk from your Coron Accommodation
If you’re just staying within the town proper, you can actually walk to Mt. Tapyas jump-off point. Just ask around and there are signages to guide you. The short walk can also serve as your warm-up.
- Ride a Tricycle
If you can’t walk from your accommodation, you can simply ride a tricycle going to the jump-off point.
Coron Travel Tips
- They say the best things in life are free. Climbing Mt. Tapyas is one of them as there are no environmental fees when you explore the place.
- Wear comfortable clothing.
- Climbing when the sunlight is harsh, wear cap and sunglasses. Put sunblock as well.
- Bring bottled water, some locals are selling at the base of the mountain. There will be no more stores once you start the climb.
- Depending on the length of stops you take, you can reach Mt. Tapyas summit in an hour.
