A place of prayer and contemplation, Regina Rica is a 13.5-hectare pilgrimage site being visited by devotees from different locations.
It was one of those Rizal photowalks that gave me another chance to visit the humble province. Rizal has been a favorite spot for a quick getaway because of its proximity to Manila. It has a share of charming restaurants like the Crescent Moon Cafe. For the artsy folks, Rizal has something great in store as well like Pinto Art Museum and Nemiranda Arthouse. You can even find what is considered as the oldest work of art in the Philippines here, the Angono Petroglyphs which are primitive images carved in a rock shelter. The mountains in Rizal are definitely being sought by adventure seekers. I’ve tried hiking Masungi Georeserve (one of my most favorite climbs) and Mt. Mapalad.
I honestly didn’t know what to expect when I was suddenly invited for the photowalk but I believed there are more places to go in Rizal even if I had explored some of its wonderful attractions before. True enough, I was surprised when we arrived at Regina Rica or Regina Rosarii Institute for Contemplation in Asia (RICA).
About Regina Rica
I’ve been to a number of pilgrimage sites in different provinces and I must say, Regina Rica is one of the astounding locations I’ve seen. The surrounding nature is simply amazing. If you’re yearning for a contemplative retreat, Regina Rica is definitely the place to go.
But there is more to Regina Rica than just the lush ambience. The 71-foot tall statue of Our Lady of Regina Rica is actually the highlight of the site. It’s a gigantic effigy of the Blessed Virgin Mary holding the child Jesus. Jose Barcena Jr. designed and sculpted the sacred masterpiece. You can also notice angels beautifully carved at the bottom of the Regina Rica statue.
From the parking area, you need to climb a bit to reach the base of the sculpture. Along the way, you will see some footprints of those who gave donations and offerings. There is an adoration chapel inside the statue that is called SULOD or Sanctuary of Universal Love and Devotion. A short briefing or orientation is being conducted before visitors are allowed to proceed to the chapel.
Regina Rica Candle Offering
After reflecting at the chapel, you can also do candle offering. The candles being sold have different colors depending on your intentions: aqua for thanksgiving, blue for peace, brown for safe trip/good job, green for hoping to pass an exam, orange for good health, red for courage, rose for family love, violet for financial prosperity, white for success, and yellow for joy/friends.
Regina Rica Church
Aside from the chapel accessible within Regina Rica statue, there is a church located down the hill where masses are held.
Suggested Proper Attire
Regina Rica is a holy place so proper attire is being suggested for devotees and visitors. For men, t-shirts (short or long sleeves, polo shirt) and pants are recommended. Camisole top/tank tops (sando) and shorts of all kinds are discouraged. Wearing of cap is not encouraged, too.
For women, the following are recommended: blouse with sleeves, knee-length dress, knee-length skirt, pants, and leggings. The following are not advised: sleeveless, plunging neckline, backless tops, shorts, and short skirts.
For both men and women, it’s important to wear a top with sleeves and a bottom that is below the knee.
Regina Rica Admission Fee
There is no admission when visiting Regina Rica. You just need to pay for the parking fee.
Overall
Regina Rica is one of the best pilgrimage sites that you can visit near Manila. The lush atmosphere is really refreshing but don’t forget that you’re in a sacred place. Make sure to observe proper decorum and wear the suggested attire.
